New York City Surprise Marriage Proposal

New York City surprise marriage proposal at Nubeluz at the Nomad Ritz-Carlton for an Indian couple shot by a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico

Alysha & Justin

The 2023 wedding season for me ended with my second Indian wedding in Puerto Rico. It was quite arguably the most rewarding event I have ever photographed. It spanned two days, had tons of moving parts and was perhaps the most gratifying wedding of which I’ve ever been part as a photographer in Puerto Rico. The groom, Sumanth, was one the kindest clients I’ve ever had; he and Nicole, his now wife, treated my team and I with the utmost care and were such a pleasure with whom to work. During the reception, he pulls me to the side and, using his peripheral vision somehow points to one of his groomsmen, Justin, and whispers that he is looking to propose to his then girlfriend, Alysha, in New York City. The reason he approached me is because my then girlfriend was living in Manhattan and Sumanth knew I would be in New York quite often; he saw it as an opportunity to collaborate even further with his friend.

As per Sumanth’s request, I reached out privately (so as to not blow his cover) to Justin while in the city and suggested we meet for coffee to discuss the possibility of documenting his surprise proposal. We agreed to meet at a local coffee shop and, when introducing himself for the first time, he casually confessed that he told Alysha he’d be meeting with a potential client so that she wouldn’t suspect anything about odd behaving; sometimes a white lie is fair in love and war. After exchanging plesantries, Justin tells me that he’s very interested in proposing at Jose Andrés’s rooftop bar/restaurant called Nubeluz in midtown Manhattan. I immediately thought it was a great idea and was enamored at the idea of having a view that amazing as a backdrop to such an amazing moment for him.

She said YES!

After a few days of marinating the idea, it’s ultimately what Justin wanted so we went with it as Plan A. He, of course, was the one responsible for making the arrangements and, once he did, he kindly asked if I could come meet him the day before to scope out the venue. I typically enjoy visiting a venue that I haven’t shot at before because I thoroughly enjoy scouting for the best lighting and scenes possible so I hopped on my electric scooter and met him as requested. Upon arrival, I was floored: the views were breathtaking and, as you made your way out onto the balcony, you had the Chrysler building right in your face. I think it was the perfect choice for Justin and the hotel employees at the Nomad Ritz-Carlton seemed to agree.

The most important reason to visit Nubeluz was to determine where exactly I was going to position myself in order to take pictures of Alysha as she waltzed in while, at the same time, figuring out how I was going to take that ever-so-important shot of Justin on one knee. After a meticulous search of ever nook and cranny, I figured out where that needed to be and we were on our way. I can only imagine it was going to be a memorable experience for Alysha and Justin but this wouldn’t go unnoticed by me seeing as how it would be my first event outside of Puerto Rico which is where most of my clientele hires me as a professional photographer. I was up for the challenge and, although it wasn’t going to be my first surprise marriage proposal, it was definitely going to feel different.

Glistening…

My goal for this session was to make it seem as authentic and genuine as possible; I was meeting Alysha for the first time (I didn’t quite interact with her during Sumanth’s wedding at the Royal Sonesta in San Juan) so I definitely had to ‘feel’ her out but I was told she loves pictures so that’s something that as a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico I love to hear. I remember telling them that I wanted to be the proverbial ‘fly on the wall’ meaning that I wanted to interpose as little as possible so that I could have them interact with each as organically as possible. This is one of my secrets to getting great candid photography: give them directions, perhaps a few prompts from time to time but, for the most part: let them be.

Table for two.

Nubeluz is riddled with lovely scenes to take advantage of from lavish seating booths to wonderful couches overlooking that Manhattan skyline. The floor to ceiling windows allow for an extraordinary amount of natural light to make its way into the bar/restaurant and I made sure to use it to my advantage at all times. It made life easy in the sense that I could could have a great balance of shots of Alysha and Justin both sitting down and either leaning on the bar or standing up for an environmental portrait. The venue really brought out the atmosphere of the occasion and I think it paired well with the overall aesthetic that Justin had envisioned even before picking my brain as a professional photographer.

There’s something really special to me in shooting a surprise marriage proposal. I can only imagine it’s a nerve-racking event and it’s safe to say Justin was definitely feeling all sorts of emotions; between weddings in Puerto Rico I thoroughly enjoy photographing these the most due to the fact that it serves as a prequel of what’s to come. I get to witness how it all started, even more so when they book me to be their photographer as well. By having that initial step documented, it allows me to enhance their love story even more because I have that preface; it’s like reading part two of a trilogy without having browsed through the first few chapters. It doesn’t always happen, of course, but when it does it makes my story-telling that much more interesting.

Just us…

One of the best things you can do in these scenarios is to tell their story with attention to detail. During a surprise marriage proposal, the focal points are explicit: the epic moment when Justin kneels down asking for Alysha’s hand in marriage as well is the obligatory shots of the epic engagement ring with which he was going to do it. I wanted to highlight it as best as I could and I loved how this shot came out with both of their glasses in the frame as well as their hand embrace reflected on the table’s glass top. Professional photographers in Puerto Rico often forget to follow the establishing shots with medium and tight images that aid in the understanding of the activity that is taking place.

Kids.

You can tell a session is going really well when you take naturally occurring shots like this one above of Alysha just soaking in the moments. Admittedly, it’s exactly what I was aiming for: two lovebirds just having the most meaninful display of their love to this day and having private conversations of what transpired to make it happen as well as thoughts of what’s about to happen moving forward. The Nubeluz bar was a great spot for photography; the staff setting up was nice enough to move out of the frame while they were setting up for opening and the mirrors in the back were a pretty good prop for getting creative as a Puerto Rico photographer. It was obviously my first time shooting here and, although I showed up just hours earlier, I was still challenging myself with anything I could find.

He sees her in him…

All in all, we had an amazing time for about the next hour or so getting as creative as possible with the best spots at the venue. It was a gratifying experience to be able to travel to New York City and capture this very special moment for Alysha and Justin. It was honestly as fun for me as it was for them! During the course of the next two days we would also work together to break the news to their parents in the lobby the following morning and in the evening the couple would rent another space so that their closest friends can also join in on their happiness. This trip was an all-encompassing experience for me as a Puerto Rico wedding photographer and one I can wish to replicate.

Must-Have Items For Photography During Your Wedding Day

When it comes to my preferences as a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, here are four must-have items I’d love to shoot for you on wedding day.

It’s all in the details…

As a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, the getting ready portion of the event may very well be my favorite part of a couple’s nuptials. To me, it acts as the preface, the establishing moments during the wedding where we introduce the main characters. It is during this time where I choose to highlight them to the best of my abilities and paint them in the best light, both figuratively and literally. There is, however, a supporting cast that often goes unmentioned but provides a wonderful assist telling a better love story for the partners getting married. I will share some of my favorites now so that, if you’re considering getting married with me, can be better prepared to take some of the most amazing shots during your special day.

Portrait of a bride reading a love letter at Copamarina Beach Resort shot by a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico

“My dearest husband…”

  1. The Love Letter

Unlike a vow book, writing a wedding-day specific love letter to your counterpart is one of the most romantic things I can shoot as a professional photographer in Puerto Rico. Pouring your emotions and letting them flow through your pen’s ink makes for some of the most memorable captures paired with my ability to capture a candid moment. The reason why writing your future husband or wife a love letter is so rewarding is because you’ll be the only one to ever read it and that alone makes the words you share that much more special. It’s a wonderful opportunity to go back to the day you met, what your relationship makes you feel and convey a heartwarming moment that you’ve shared in the past, one that has become a stepping stone and led you to where you are today. The really epic love letters always make someone shed a tear if truly written in an emotional way and that’s the perfect change for me to attain some truly intimate shots as a Puerto Rico wedding photographer.

“…because you deserve it.”

2. Couple’s Gift

Many times unbeknownst to me, the couple will gift themselves with a token of their appreciation towards one another. Sometimes it’s a small detail that is tied to either an inside joke or a past memory they’ve made together while others may actually be quite lavish in nature, symbolic of how much they mean to each other. I think that couples who gift each other an item and exchange them during the wedding day really add value to the getting ready portion of the wedding day, one that I treasure dearly as a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico. I’ve seen it all from a watch that the groom would wear on the day of the wedding to a bracelet that the bride would don as it glistens while walking down the aisle. Regardless of what you decide to gift, my recommendation is that it moves your counterpart to the point where I’m able to put myself in a position to capture that end result as a professional photographer in Puerto Rico.

3. The Vow Book

As opposed to the aforementioned love letter, having a dedicated vow book is something very special. Sometimes they’re written in advance and others, in a more sentimental way, can be written the day of the wedding and have a little bit more weight to them. As a photographer in Puerto Rico focused on destination weddings, I know that, to a bride and groom, a vow book goes way deeper than a love letter ever will. It’s essentially a promise contract, one that will be honored for a long as both members shall live. Think of this as the previous love letter but on steroids. A vow book promises to deliver some of the more emotional moments that I will ever capture so really writing from the heart will put me in a position to succeed. Images like shedding a tear, a hand on the face and even an image of a bride or groom reading it in private from a distance will be extremely meaningful when added to your final gallery.

4. The Details

The details are considered more of that pertaining to each individual. They represent what is symbolic to each respective partner and, as a photographer in San Juan, Puerto Rico, I thoroughly enjoy capturing these as creatively as possible. From whiskey bottles and luxury watches to Louis Vuitton bags and handcrafter invitations, nice flat lay photography gives me a great starting point for your wedding day. I usually love getting to the wedding venue, regardless if its Hacienda Siesta Alegre or Hotel Vanderbilt in Condado, so that I can take my time decorating the details and exercise my craft in a stress-free environment. I wholeheartedly believe that I’d be doing a disservice to my couple if I were to skip photographing details simply because I think they play such a vital role in the storytelling process of someone’s special day. They’re like stepping stones leading up to a wonderful journey that you’re about to embark on and, as a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I want to make sure I tell an engaging one.

The Sepia Bride Fiasco: What It Is & What We Can All Learn

Sepia Gate, as it is now known, is a contractual battle between wedding photographer and a self-proclaimed “bridezilla”. In this article, I outline what the commotion is and what can be done to prevent it as a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico.

Portrait of an angry bridezilla shot by a professional photographer in Puerto Rico

The wedding photography community was shaken to its core recently as a result of a debacle that transpired between a now famous client and her photographer. Alexandra Jaye, a bride who tied the knot in Anguilla not too long ago, took to social media to voice her displeasure with Hannah Elise because of the final images that were delivered of her wedding day. From what we know, Alexandra began disparaging Hannah online through a set of TikTok videos stemming from her wedding gallery which she found to be way different than that from what she was expecting to receive. The main reason why this industry was completely caught off guard is due to the fact that this doesn’t happen often and in this blog post I will explain why that is, what caused it and what prospective clients as well as wedding photographers can learn from other people’s mistakes.

By now, this matter has been well documented from social media to podcasts so I’ll take the opportunity to briefly summarize in case you’re just joining this party. Hannah Elise is a destination wedding photographer based in Florida who initially caught the attention of Alexandra as a result of perusing Instagram “as people normally do”. The bride in question then proceeds to explicitly state of her awareness of Hanna’s ‘golden’ tone to her images (something that is evidenced by her presets). In order to corroborate this information, I, as a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, took it upon myself to follow Alexandra’s claims and I can certify that Hannah’s editing style does, in fact, have an overall warm tonality to her entire gallery. She is a self-proclaimed ‘true to color’ photographer but I wholeheartedly disagree (more on that a little bit later).

That being said, the first thing that comes to mind is the fact that the bride failed to perform her due diligence; this has actually yielded a brand new clause within the nomenclature of my wedding photography contract. What this means is that Alexandra has gone on record as saying that she failed to realize Hannah’s ‘golden’ hue started to weigh on her a month after her wedding gallery was delivered. She cites yellow teeth, lack of makeup details and even red streaks in her hair as part of the claim that something needs to be done about these edits. As an experienced photographer in Puerto Rico, I can wholeheartedly agree with Alexandra’s take shortly thereafter: the probabilities of Hannah using her own presets for wedding galleries is extremely likely; to be expected.

Here’s the kicker: a preset has a lot of moving parts and ironically none at the same time. In order to put together a preset that actually works, the same shooting scenario has to be consistent throughout the example images that one must photograph in order to make said preset relevant time and time again for, not just the creator, but people that can possibly purchase it as a digital asset. As part of my investigation in this matter, I swung by Hannah’s accounts and saw one common denominator that was her ultimate demise: the golden glow preset appears to have been manufactured during Hannah’s plethora of weddings shot during ideal photography situations: clear skies, epic sunsets, colorful scenery, etc. This was obviously not the case with Alexandra’s wedding, hence the discrepancy.

When you slap on a preset to any photo, the aesthetics are essentially ‘baked in’. That is photography jargon for when the settings that compose that preset are stationary and will be applied cohesively to any image regardless of composition, lighting, subjects and any other parameter belonging to a particular set of pixels. This, in turn, affects Alexandra’s end result because what looks great in most of Hannah’s pictorials will not necessarily be up to par with what the bride was expecting; what kills me as a professional photographer is that it appears as though Hannah failed to recognize this gap that forms between preset and exported .JPEG and did not properly tweak the sliders to make her preset work. Eventually Alexandra noticed, raised concerns and it began a contentious debate of who should be doing what and why. Rumor has it Hannah is now considering suing for defamation and slander; the entire community will be keeping a close watch at what transpires.

What can both couples and vendors learn from this?

  1. When seeking a wedding photographer, do your research. Odds are that Alexandra casually stumbled across Hannah’s editing style and didn’t see past the surface. She most likely failed to ask key questions and dive deep into Hannah’s galleries before pulling the trigger and giving her the job. This is the most important day in the lives of many couples (barring any other personal achievement or accolade) so you have to be absolutely prepared to ask all sorts of questions about everything from their history and styles to how the adapt to changing scenarios and work under pressure.

  2. When you receive a lead, probe them right back. Just because I get an inquiry from this website doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m going to be taking you on as a client. Whenever a prospective client reaches out to ask about my services, I ask them insightful questions such as what caught their attention about my style, first and foremost. If they’re contacting you it means they like what they see and I use that as leverage to question how they met, how long they’ve been dating and what their vision is for their special day. It’s great to be desired and sought after but it’s just as important to make sure you’ll eventually see eye-to-eye with your client not just during the initial stages, but long after your business relationship is finalized. Prevent nightmares by being diligent.

  3. As far as expectations are concerned, set them together. If this previously discussed tragedy goes, in fact, go to trial it’ll inevitably become a landmark case within the photography community. Alexandra and Hannah (at least from the outside looking in) failed to set expectations regarding what the final result would be and ultimately reached an impasse when Alex demanded her pictures be reedited and also requested .RAWs to be sent (something that makes me cringe as a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico). If I join forces with a bride and groom to shoot their elopement photographs, I sit them down and talk about what they want as well as how we’re going to work together for that vision to come to life. As long as we’re holding hands through the process, we also hold each other accountable that we’re doing everything within the realms of our respective possibilities to aid one another in doing so.

  4. What gets said, gets written: no work gets done without a contract. I don’t care if you want an hour of couple’s photography in Old San Juan or to hire me as your luxury destination photographer in Puerto Rico: if you bring forth ideas to the table, requirements and non-negotiables, we’re putting ink to paper. Things shouldn’t end there: if we happen to sit down during a virtual meeting to banter back-and-forth about new ideas and we cement them, the current contract gets amended and resigned. I’ll be the first one to admit I love that I get to photograph love itself but it’s all fun and games when someone crosses a line they shouldn’t and before that happens, it’s better to set clear boundaries about what everyone’s role is going to be moving forward.

Latvian Destination Wedding in Puerto Rico

Join me as we take a look at one of the most beautiful Latvian weddings I’ve ever shot as a destination wedding photographer at the gorgeous Courtyard Marriott in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico

Bride details at Courtyard Marriott Isla Verde shot by one of the best photographers in Puerto Rico

Shiny symmetry

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to capture my first Latvian ceremony as a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico. The union of two individuals from different cultures always brings a unique and beautiful dynamic to the celebration. As I prepared to document every moment of this special event, I found myself eager to showcase the blend of Latvian traditions against the backdrop of the stunning Puerto Rican landscape. The prospect of capturing the intricate details and emotions of this cross-cultural affair filled me with anticipation and a sense of artistic fulfillment. I approached this assignment with great respect for both the Latvian heritage and the beauty of Puerto Rico, aiming to create visual memories that would be cherished for a lifetime.

Nels, the groom from Seattle, Washington, met Ance, the bride from Latvia, and it was love at first sight. Their connection transcended borders and cultures, uniting them in a bond that was undeniable. The way Nels looked at Ance spoke volumes, reflecting a deep admiration and respect for the woman who had captured his heart. Likewise, Ance found solace in Nels' presence, feeling understood and cherished in ways she had never experienced before. As they embarked on this journey together, their love only grew stronger, setting the foundation for a marriage filled with passion, understanding, and unwavering support.

Ance and Nels chose to have their destination wedding in Puerto Rico at the beautiful Courtyard Marriott in Isla Verde after hearing about its stunning beachfront location and exceptional amenities. The couple was enthralled by the idea of exchanging vows against the backdrop of the Caribbean Sea while surrounded by their closest family and friends. This luxurious venue was the perfect setting for their dream wedding, offering both sophistication and relaxation for all their guests to enjoy. Ance and Nels were confident that their special day at the Courtyard Marriott would be nothing short of magical and unforgettable.

I am no stranger to this venue and have shot countless weddings here. The familiarity with the location allows me to anticipate the best angles, lighting conditions, and backdrops to create stunning and memorable wedding photos. Over the years, I have mastered the art of capturing the essence and beauty of each ceremony and reception held in this picturesque setting. My experience and expertise in shooting weddings at this venue ensure that every couple's special day is preserved in timeless and breathtaking imagery.

The Courtyard Marriott Isla Verde is one of my favorite wedding venues in Puerto Rico due to its versatile offerings. The beachfront location provides a picturesque backdrop for capturing unforgettable moments, while the abundance of amenities and indoor facilities ensures a seamless and memorable event regardless of the weather. Couples can exchange vows with their toes in the sand and then move indoors for a luxurious reception, all within the same venue. This versatility allows for a wide range of creative possibilities to capture stunning and cinematic wedding images that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Toast to the good life…

Admittedly the weather wasn't cooperating as much as we would've hoped but, as a professional wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, we managed to circumvent the situation and take amazing pictures. Despite the unforeseen conditions, we found creative ways to capture stunning and unique moments for the bride and groom. Our experience and expertise allowed us to adapt quickly, ensuring that the couple's special day was beautifully documented, regardless of the climate challenges. Through our keen eye for detail and dedication to excellence, we delivered a breathtaking collection of images that exceeded expectations, showcasing the love and joy of the newlyweds amidst the backdrop of a less-than-ideal weather day.

The wedding was scheduled right in the middle of three weeks of heavy rain and it definitely put a dent in our plans. I remember Ance specifically wanting some pictures by the beach during sunset but those unfortunately couldn’t take place because it was a total torrential downpour during Golden Hour. We had to move things inside and take some shots of the bride and groom at a few of the lovely indoor venues (which isn’t all that bad either.) Eventually things cleared up and we were able to get together in Las Brisas, the popular wedding reception spot typically reserved for weddings at the Courtyard Marriott in Isla Verde.

Latvian wedding in Puerto Rico

In Latvian wedding traditions, the couple is often required to undertake various challenges to prove their commitment to one another and their ability to work together. One common tradition involves the groom needing to pass certain tests set by the bridesmaids before he can see the bride. These tests can range from solving puzzles to declaring his love in creative ways. Additionally, during the reception, it is customary for the bride and groom to work together to saw a log in half. This symbolizes their ability to work together to overcome obstacles in their marriage. Overall, Latvian wedding traditions emphasize the importance of teamwork, endurance, and cooperation between the couple. Ance and Nels decided to partake in more conventional traditions such as the blessing of the bread and a typical Latvian dance with the entourage. The atmosphere was filled with joy as family and friends gathered to witness the couple's special day. I made sure to capture every detail of the ceremony with precision and artistry.

The rest of the festivities of this Latvian wedding proceeded without a hitch. As the evening unfolded, the guests reveled in the joyous celebration, savoring exquisite cuisine and dancing to lively traditional music. The elegantly adorned venue sparkled with a warm ambiance, setting the perfect stage for heartfelt toasts and memorable moments. Every detail was meticulously coordinated, ensuring a seamless and unforgettable experience for the newlyweds and their loved ones. From the cutting of the decadent cake to the lively hora, the atmosphere was filled with love, laughter, and happiness, making it a truly magical occasion.

As a luxury wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I have recently started shooting a diverse array of internationally-themed weddings, including sub-Asian and Assyrian ceremonies. Embracing the rich cultural tapestry of these weddings allows me to bring a unique perspective to my photography, capturing not only the intricate rituals and customs but also the deep emotions and connections that are universal in every celebration of love. Each international wedding presents a new and exciting creative challenge that I wholeheartedly embrace, aiming to deliver stunning cinematic imagery that reflects the beauty and significance of these diverse traditions.

When it comes to photography, is Generative AI a friend…or a foe?

Is Generative AI a friend…or a foe? That’s what we’re going to be discussing, specifically from the standpoint of a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico. On one hand, it definitely speeds up my editing workflow but it can also be detrimental to my creative process. Only the best photographers know how to walk the line between using it to your advantage and crass misuse. Choose wisely!

Artificial intelligence is significantly altering the landscape of photography, changing how images are captured, edited, and shared. AI-powered editing tools now offer photographers the ability to enhance photos with a simple click, streamlining post-processing tasks. Additionally, AI-driven cameras can assist in framing shots, adjusting settings in real-time, and even predicting the best moment to press the shutter. While some purists may argue that AI compromises the artistry and skill required in traditional photography, there is no denying its efficiency and accessibility in producing stunning visuals. As AI continues to advance, photographers must adapt to incorporate these technologies into their workflows to stay competitive in the ever-evolving industry.

As a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I am constantly seeking ways to enhance my craft and provide top-notch service to my clients. Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence has allowed me to become a more efficient and effective artist. By utilizing AI-driven tools for tasks such as image editing, sorting, and organizing, I am now able to streamline my workflow and devote more time to capturing breathtaking moments for couples on their special day. This technological advancement not only benefits my productivity but also ensures that I deliver consistently high-quality results to my clients, helping me stand out in the competitive wedding photography industry.

Ric Lewis & Kayla Douglas

When it comes to elopement photography in Puerto Rico (something that I do regularly), harnessing the power of artificial intelligence is crucial for staying ahead in the industry. AI can streamline workflows, enhance editing processes, and improve overall image quality, allowing photographers to deliver exceptional results efficiently. By leveraging AI tools for tasks like organizing images, enhancing colors, and reducing noise, elopement photographers can focus more on creativity and personalized client experiences. Embracing AI technology can lead to increased productivity, higher quality work, and ultimately, greater customer satisfaction in capturing intimate elopement moments in Puerto Rico's beautiful settings.

Aftershoot has completely revolutionized my post-processing workflow as one of the top photographers in Puerto Rico. This powerful software tool offers a wide range of advanced features that have significantly enhanced the efficiency and quality of my editing process. From its intuitive interface to its cutting-edge editing tools, Aftershoot has enabled me to elevate my images to a whole new level of cinematic beauty. The automated workflows and precise controls have saved me valuable time while ensuring consistency across all my photographs. Without a doubt, Aftershoot has become an indispensable asset in my photography toolkit, allowing me to deliver stunning, high-quality images to my clients with greater ease and sophistication.

Moreover, platforms like Adobe's Lightroom are now making it substantially easier to remove unwanted items from an image with just one click. The advancements in technology have paved the way for photographers to enhance their images seamlessly, saving valuable time and effort. With this feature, wedding photographers can now ensure that every detail in their photos is pristine and perfect, capturing the essence of the special day without distractions. This sophisticated tool in Lightroom empowers Puerto Rico wedding photographers like myself at to deliver exceptional and flawless cinematic imagery that exceeds our clients' expectations.

Ric Lewis Photography & Kayla Douglas Artistry

Generative AI can also be a detriment to a photographer. While this technology offers convenience and efficiency in generating content, it can never truly replace the creativity, artistry, and emotional intelligence that a Puerto Rico elopement photographer brings to the table. AI may be capable of producing images based on algorithms and data, but it lacks the ability to capture the unique essence and emotions of a wedding day. Clients choose a luxury photographer not only for the visuals but also for the personalized experience and expertise that only a human touch can provide. In the realm of luxury wedding photography, genuine connection and artistic vision are irreplaceable elements that set apart a photographer's work.

Generative AI holds significant drawbacks for photographers despite its advanced capabilities. Firstly, a major concern is the potential loss of creative control. For instance, if a photographer relies heavily on AI to generate compositions, they might find themselves detached from the artistic process, resulting in generic or uninspired work. Secondly, there is a risk of ethical implications, such as copyright infringement. Using AI to create images similar to copyrighted work could lead to legal issues and damage a photographer's reputation. Lastly, the reliance on generative AI may hinder a photographer's ability to develop their own style and voice. Over time, this could result in a portfolio that lacks personal flair and fails to stand out in a competitive industry full of the best photographers in Puerto Rico.

Ric Lewis Photography & Kayla Douglas Artistry

As a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, my relationship with generative AI is a complex one, filled with both love and hate. On one hand, the technology provides a wealth of creative possibilities, allowing me to experiment with different styles and effects to enhance my cinematic imagery. However, there is also a sense of unease that comes with relying on AI to assist in my creative process. It can sometimes feel like a constant ebb and flow - a delicate balance between utilizing AI to streamline tasks and maintain a competitive edge, while also grappling with the fear of it potentially replacing the human touch and artistry that sets my work apart. Despite the challenges, I continue to navigate this relationship, acknowledging the benefits it brings to my craft while striving to retain the soulful essence of my luxury wedding photography.

My Biggest Struggle As A Professional Photographer

After making the decision to become a full-time wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, what was once a part-time hobby is now my all encompassing profession. It has, however, left a void I’ve yet been able to fill. In this article I explain what that is and how I think it affects, not just myself, but other professional photographers in Puerto Rico as well.

Elopement photographer in Puerto Rico

My view everyday…

As I was filling out an application for a website, I came across one of the most difficult questions I’ve had to answer in years…

What are some of your hobbies?

I froze. I didn’t know what to write or what boxes to check. That’s when I realized: I didn’t have any that didn’t involve holding a camera in my hand or setting it up on a tripod to film myself. Ever since I made the decision to become a professional wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, my ONLY hobby turned into my career. Cameras have consumed my life for the past eight years and if I’m not shooting an elopement in Puerto Rico or taking pictures in Old San Juan for fun while testing out a new lens, I’m at home creating content for social media and furthering my career in front of a computer monitor.

For the first time in a while I felt lost. Admittedly, I felt as though my sense of self was shot to Hell (no pun intended). The identity I had built for almost a decade now had immediately shifted leaving a void I now didn’t know how to fill. How do you cope with reinventing yourself when everything you’ve come to know now consumes your everyday life with no time for anything else? I set out to figure this out on my own and, although it’s been somewhat of a struggle, I think I’m onto something.

If it’s not one…it’s the other.

It’s easy for me to fall into the trap of treating my profession AS a hobby. We’re simply monetizing and commercializing that which we love doing already so it’s difficult to draw the line between one and the other. As a result, you have absolutely no idea on how to start creating a new hobby where the previous one existed. I have, however, made strides to fill the void namely through learning languages. I’ve always been bilingual since birth (Mom is originally from the Bronx, New York and taught English at almost every educational level) so I grew up speaking both English and Spanish simultaneously. I picked up Portuguese in college as a requirement from my Bachelor’s degree, which came in handy once I met my Brazilian girlfriend at the time.

Today I’m teaching myself some German and Italian via the Duolingo platform in hopes of becoming a well-established polyglot. I think it’ll come in handy when trying to promote myself overseas as a destination wedding photographer; not that I’m not already but most of my clientele comes to Puerto Rico to tie the knot with me (not the other way around). I do love to travel and speaking various languages will definitely be beneficial when visiting countries in Europe, a part of the world I’ve never seen. Ever since I can remember I’ve been a fan of growing through learning and I think that by giving myself the opportunity to acquire additional skillsets, I’ll be able to take my business to the next level.

Elopement photographers Puerto Rico

Since I do have a background in sports, I picked up two signature tennis racquets used by Roger Federer himself (now retired). I figured I could take occasional trips down memory lane playing the sport that gave me so much. I first started playing tennis at age 14 and just four years later found myself at the top of the junior rankings in Puerto Rico. Shortly thereafter I was recruited to play some college tennis but not before trying out my luck in the pros (maintaining amateur status so that I could still be eligible for scholarships). Once it was all said and done, I started teaching tennis as a way to give back to the sport that gave me so much. Now, as an adult, photography has taken such a big chunk of my time that I can barely step foot on the court anymore; those racquets I mentioned buying are now collecting dust in a corner of my bedroom. Sometimes I’ll grab ‘em and swing around just to get that sense of playing. Tragic…I know.

One of the best ways I could invest my time is to do animal rights activism. As a vegan of seven years, it goes hand-in-hand with my belief system and my values move me to speak to animal cruelty. I was often out in the streets doing what’s called ‘outreach’ to unsuspecting bystanders who’d glance casually at the footage on our televisions of slaughterhouses hard “at work”. It’s still deep rooted and engrained with me but unfortunately I can’t commit to activism as I once did, sadly. I just have a hard time allocating the necessary windows of opportunity and resources because photography has now taken the front seat to my life and I’m firmly behind the wheel. This begs the question…

Where do I go from here…?

Lights, camera…ANSWERS?

Time will tell what replaces such a huge part of my life. Don’t get me wrong: it hasn’t gone anywhere; it’s just taken a life of its own in the form of employment. Wedding photography in Puerto Rico is how I make a living, create long-lasting memories and achieve personal satisfaction but: what will take its place? Will it continue to be language learning? Am I going to try to hit some tennis balls a few times a week? I don’t know what the future holds but I do know this: I’m not alone. I know a lot of fellow elopement photographers in Puerto Rico who are battling the same issues in their lives. Taking the plunge of making your passion your form of employment is never easy; you have to weigh so many things in order to achieve some sort of balance.

There is, however, something giving me piece of mind. I now know that cameras will always have a special place in my heart. It is through them that I can commemorate events for my clients, entertain myself whenever I don’t have mandatory obligations as well as simply exercise my creativity both at home and abroad as a professional photographer in Puerto Rico and the world. Needless to say I won’t be giving up looking through a lens anytime soon but I know it can’t all be photo and video. I’ll eventually get to a place in my life where holding a camera will play second fiddle to something else. The question is: what?!

How To Choose Your Wedding Photographer

Choosing a photographer is one of the most rewarding yet stressful parts of your wedding day. Lucky for you I’ve put together five of the most important talking points when figuring out which option is the best for you. This should help take a load of your shoulders and ease the process of hiring the best candidate for your special day in Puerto Rico.

As a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico. I can honestly say that choosing this vendor a crucial decision that can significantly impact your big day and create lasting memories. A skilled photographer not only captures beautiful moments but also understands your vision, style, and personality as a couple. They have the ability to immortalize the emotions, details, and atmosphere of your wedding in a way that resonates with you for years to come. The photographs from your wedding day will be cherished mementos that you'll share with loved ones and pass down through generations. Therefore, investing time in selecting a photographer whose work you admire and whose approach aligns with your values is essential to ensure that your wedding day is captured in a way that truly reflects the love and joy you experience.

When choosing the photographer who will capture the memories of your wedding day, one must exercise considerable caution. This decision involves more than just technical skills or a good portfolio; it requires a deep understanding of your vision for the day and the ability to convey the emotions and essence of the event through photographs. Each photographer brings a unique style and perspective, so it is crucial to find someone whose work resonates with you. Additionally, communicating effectively with the chosen photographer is essential to ensure that they understand your expectations and preferences. Ultimately, selecting the right photographer can make a significant difference in how your special day is remembered for years to come.

You need to feel heard and understood.

Here at Francisco Álvarez Photography, we believe that the first and foremost task of your wedding photographer should be to make you feel genuinely valued. Your special day is a collection of unique moments and emotions, each deserving to be captured authentically. By taking the time to truly listen to your vision, concerns, and preferences, a photographer can tailor their approach to ensure your story is told in a way that resonates with you. Feeling understood instills a sense of trust and confidence, paving the way for a smoother and more comfortable experience, ultimately leading to stunning photographs that reflect your individuality and love story.

Ensuring a strong connection with a wedding photographer is vital when capturing one's special day. The ability to assimilate with their style, preferences, and vision can result in breathtaking photos that truly reflect the essence of the occasion. A photographer who aligns with the client's vision can skillfully portray the emotions, beauty, and moments that make the event unique. This alignment fosters trust, comfort, and open communication, leading to a seamless collaboration that enhances the overall experience. Ultimately, being on the same page with your wedding photographer not only results in stunning images but also preserves cherished memories that can be cherished for a lifetime.

You need to be catered to as unique

A wedding photographer should never make you feel as if you're just another client. Their role goes beyond capturing moments; it involves understanding the unique story and emotions that make your day special. From the initial consultation to the final delivery of your photos, a skilled photographer will strive to create a personalized experience that reflects your style, personalities, and vision. They should approach each wedding with fresh eyes, aiming to craft images that resonate with the couple's essence, rather than relying on standard shots or formulas. By fostering a connection and building trust, a great wedding photographer ensures that you feel valued and understood, resulting in timeless images that truly speak to your love story.

In the realm of wedding photography, clients may come and go, each with their unique vision and expectation for their special day. However, a skilled wedding photographer understands the essence of making each client feel truly valued and singular amidst the hustle and bustle of wedding preparations. The ability to convey a sense of undivided attention and dedication, as if the client is the sole focus of the photographer's lens, is what sets exceptional professionals apart. This personalized touch not only captures memorable moments but also creates a lasting impression of feeling cherished and significant in a sea of celebrations.

To go along you have to get along

When it comes to choosing a wedding photographer, finding someone with whom you can truly vibe and see eye-to-eye on all things is essential. The photographer will be capturing one of the most important days of your life, so having a comfortable and positive connection is key to ensuring that the images reflect your unique style and personalities. Establishing a good rapport with your photographer can make the entire process smoother and more enjoyable. Being on the same page in terms of vision, preferences, and communication style can lead to stunning photos that truly capture the essence of your special day.

On your wedding day, the photographer will shadow your every move, capturing the heartfelt moments and intricate details that make the day so special. It is crucial to hire someone with whom you genuinely get along to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. A photographer who you connect with will understand your vision, anticipate your needs, and effortlessly blend into the joyous atmosphere of the day. Establishing a good rapport with your wedding photographer not only ensures beautiful photos but also creates a comfortable environment where you can be yourself, allowing your love story to unfold naturally through each captured moment.

By your side every step of the way

Your wedding photographer plays a crucial role in capturing the special moments of your big day. They should be a reassuring presence, ensuring that you feel comfortable and at ease throughout the event. A skilled photographer understands the significance of the occasion and strives to create a supportive and unobtrusive environment. They should blend seamlessly into the background, capturing candid moments while remaining sensitive to your needs. Feeling overwhelmed or alone is the last thing you should experience on your wedding day, and a professional photographer will work diligently to make sure you feel supported and valued as they document the precious memories of your celebration.

As a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I enjoy the embodiment of a multifaceted role, needing to wear many hats beyond capturing moments behind the camera. Wedding photographers should be adept at seamlessly transitioning from vendor to problem solver, therapist, and even timekeeper. On the island known for its vibrant culture and warm hospitality, these professionals must be comfortable immersing themselves in the festivities, forging connections with the couple and their families. Being more than just a vendor, a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico plays a crucial part in weaving the intricate tapestry of a couple's special day, capturing not just images but emotions and memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Through photography, I am able to freeze beautiful, fleeting moments in time, while video allows me to encapsulate the emotion and movement of the event. By combining both mediums, I can provide couples with a thorough and evocative representation of their special day, ensuring that every aspect is preserved for years to come. This complete approach not only brings the event to life but also allows the couple to relive the magic of their wedding day, keeping their memories vivid and timeless.

How To Capture The Perfect First Look At Your Destination Wedding In Puerto Rico

If you’re thinking of capturing a first look during your destination wedding in Puerto Rico, here’s how my team and I capture that perfect moment that’ll live in your memories forever.

Having a first look during a destination wedding in Puerto Rico can be a truly special and intimate experience for the bride and groom. This private moment allows the couple to savor each other's presence, calm any pre-ceremony nerves, and enjoy a quiet, uninterrupted exchange of emotions before the whirlwind of the day begins. Against the backdrop of Puerto Rico's breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture, the first look becomes even more memorable, capturing the raw emotions of the couple in a setting that echoes the beauty and romance of their love story. It's a cherished opportunity for the couple to create lasting memories together, adding depth and personal significance to their wedding day in this enchanting destination.

A first look at a destination wedding holds a unique kind of magic, particularly for a couple who have been separated for more than a day, their anticipation mingling with the excitement of the unfamiliar surroundings. As they finally lay eyes on each other, against the backdrop of a breathtaking locale, a rush of emotions sweeps over them - from the nerves of being apart to the overwhelming joy of reuniting. In that singular moment, all the anticipation, nerves, and distance melt away, leaving only the two of them, fully present in the enchanting beauty of the destination and in each other's adoring gaze.

puerto rico wedding photographer

While it's a common practice for couples to hire a single photographer to capture their first look, having more than one photographer can offer a unique perspective on this emotional moment. By having multiple photographers, you can ensure that both partners' reactions are highlighted and preserved in equal measure. Each photographer can focus on one partner, providing a comprehensive portrayal of the heightened emotions and genuine expressions during this pivotal moment. This approach allows for a more nuanced documentation of the couple's first look, ensuring both partners' experiences are equally represented and cherished for years to come.

As destination wedding photographers in Puerto Rico, we approach wedding photography with the intention of capturing every precious moment in a balanced and comprehensive manner. When assigning photographers to capture the couple's embrace, we ensure that one photographer focuses on the bride, while the second shooter seamlessly handles documenting the groom. By doing so, we aim to equally and authentically document the emotions and reactions of both partners during this heartwarming embrace, cherishing the unique connection and love between them in every aspect of the imagery we create.

Puerto Rico Wedding Photographer

To capture the anticipation and emotion of a first look at a destination wedding in Puerto Rico, the key lies in strategic positioning of the photographers. By ensuring that both photographers are on the same side of the couple, we guarantee that they are never in each other's camera frame. This approach allows for an uninterrupted flow of shots, preserving the authenticity of the moment as the couple sees each other for the first time. With an unobtrusive and coordinated presence, our team at Francisco Álvarez strives to encapsulate the raw, unfiltered reactions and atmosphere of this significant occasion, all while respecting the intimate dynamics at play.

A versatile lens like a 24-70mm can be a valuable asset when capturing the many moments of a destination wedding, especially during the emotional first look. Its wide focal range allows for stunning establishing shots, framing the beautiful backdrop of Puerto Rico as the couple comes together for the first time on their special day. As the event unfolds, the lens smoothly transitions to capturing medium shots, encapsulating the emotions and surroundings in elegant detail. Finally, the 24-70mm excels at delivering tight, intimate portraits of the couple, allowing for the subtle nuances and genuine connection to be immortalized in timeless imagery. Its adaptability serves as a reliable companion throughout the day, ensuring that every cherished moment of the destination wedding is flawlessly preserved.

Photographers in Puerto Rico

It is essential to communicate the timing of the first look to both photographers assigned to capture this special moment. Knowing the exact timing ensures that both photographers are prepared and in position to capture every intimate and candid moment as the couple sees each other for the first time. This coordination is crucial in ensuring that no detail is missed and that the emotions and reactions of the couple are beautifully documented from different angles and perspectives. Clear communication of the first look timing allows the photographers to efficiently work together in a synchronized manner, resulting in a comprehensive and seamless coverage of this significant occasion.

When incorporating videography into capturing the first look, it's essential for the videographer to maintain a static shot of the moment on a tripod, positioned from a side angle. This approach allows for a stable and comprehensive view of the initial reaction and emotions of the bride and groom. Simultaneously, a second shot, whether handheld or on a gimbal, circling around the couple can add dynamism and intimacy to the footage, capturing different angles of their expressions and interactions. By combining both static and dynamic shots, videographers can provide a well-rounded and emotionally impactful portrayal of this significant moment.

As an experienced destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, the traditional first look as the bride walks down the aisle is deeply ingrained in wedding customs. However, for those seeking to elevate their destination wedding experience, embracing a separate, more creative first look prior to the ceremony can yield remarkable dividends. Whether it's a breathtaking coastal vista, a vibrant city street, or a lush tropical garden, the diverse and stunning landscapes of Puerto Rico offer the perfect backdrop for this unique pre-ceremony tradition. This intimate and often emotional moment between the couple not only captures a personalized narrative of their love but also sets the tone for a day filled with authentic connection and cherished memories. Embracing this alternative first look not only adds a touch of creativity to the wedding day but also enhances the overall experience, setting the stage for an unforgettable celebration in the enchanting ambiance of Puerto Rico.

Indian Weddings in Puerto Rico: My New Guilty Pleasure

Why you should come to Puerto Rico for your Indian destination wedding.

Haldi

Puerto Rico offers a picturesque and culturally rich setting that makes it an ideal location for destination Indian weddings. The island's stunning beaches, lush landscapes, and historic architecture provide the perfect backdrop for vibrant and extravagant celebrations. With its warm and welcoming people, Puerto Rico embraces diversity and is well-equipped to accommodate the elaborate customs and traditions of Indian weddings. The island's blend of Spanish, African, and Taíno influences adds an extra layer of cultural richness, creating a unique and unforgettable experience for couples and their guests. Additionally, Puerto Rico's convenient location and well-developed tourism infrastructure make it easily accessible for international guests, ensuring a memorable and seamless wedding celebration in a truly enchanting destination.

This year has been an incredible journey of capturing the vibrant and culturally rich Indian destination weddings in Puerto Rico. The first wedding took place in January, where the backdrop of lush greenery and azure skies provided a picturesque setting for the extravagant celebrations. The vibrant colors, intricate rituals, and lively dance performances infused every frame with an unparalleled energy and joy. The second wedding, held in December, showcased a different facet of Indian traditions against the backdrop of a breathtaking sunset over the Caribbean Sea. Both experiences allowed me to encapsulate the essence of love, culture, and grandeur, creating timeless memories for the couples and their families to cherish forever. As a Puerto Rico destination wedding photographer, it pressed buttons in me I didn’t know I had.

Sumanth & Nicole

As a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, there's nothing quite like the vibrant energy and rich cultural tapestry of Indian weddings. From the dazzling array of colors to the infectious rhythms of traditional music and the mesmerizing choreography of intricate dance performances, Indian weddings are a feast for the senses. The joy and exuberance that permeate every ceremony and celebration are truly unmatched, providing an endless array of captivating moments to capture through our lenses. Our team's deep appreciation and respect for diverse cultures perfectly align with the ethos of Indian weddings, allowing us to seamlessly blend into the festivities and encapsulate the love, traditions, and sheer liveliness of these extraordinary events.

In an Indian destination wedding, the Haldi, Baraat, and Sangeet are integral elements that weave together tradition, celebration, and community. The Haldi ceremony involves applying turmeric paste on the bride and groom's skin to cleanse and purify them before the wedding. This ritual symbolizes the couple's preparation for their journey together. The Baraat is a joyous procession where the groom, riding a decorated horse or vehicle, is accompanied by his family and friends to the wedding venue. It's a vibrant and lively affair filled with music, dancing, and exuberance. Finally, the Sangeet is a pre-wedding event filled with musical performances, dance, and revelry, bringing both families together to create unforgettable memories. These traditions not only add color and vibrancy to the wedding festivities but also hold deep cultural significance, uniting families and creating cherished moments that the couple and their loved ones will treasure forever.

Classy Baraat

Indian grooms embody a unique blend of demanding yet reasonable expectations when it comes to their wedding photography. With a deep appreciation for tradition and cultural significance, Indian grooms desire photography in Puerto Rico that impeccably captures the grandeur and emotions of their special day. They seek images that reflect the opulence of the ceremonies and the richness of the cultural tapestry, while also conveying the authentic, heartfelt moments shared with their partner. Their standards are high, and rightfully so, as they expect nothing less than artistry, technical skill, and storytelling from their destination wedding photographer. Their discerning eye seeks a photographer who can skillfully encapsulate the vibrancy, elegance, and significance of each wedding ritual, ensuring that every photograph becomes a timeless treasure that encapsulates the essence of their celebration.

The vibrant and ornate Kurtas worn during the festivities of an Indian wedding are a sight to behold. The explosion of colors and intricate designs create a visually captivating atmosphere that becomes a perfect subject for my photography. As the folkloric music fills the air, the rhythmic beats and melodious tunes infuse energy and joy into every frame I capture. The overall environment of a destination Indian wedding in Puerto Rico is a true spectacle, blending cultural traditions with the beauty of the tropical surroundings, providing me with endless opportunities to capture moments of love, celebration, and cultural richness through my lens. Every click of the camera immortalizes the fusion of traditions, colors, and emotions, creating an unforgettable visual narrative that reflects the profound significance of these joyous occasions.

Indian Wedding at Royal Sonesta, San Juan

With its seamless blend of breathtaking landscapes and world-class hospitality, Puerto Rico undoubtedly stands as an alluring and captivating destination for couples dreaming of a truly unforgettable Indian wedding experience.

As a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I have been fortunate to capture the beauty and essence of various cultural weddings, but Indian destination weddings have truly been a breath of fresh air. The vibrant colors, rich traditions, and elaborate ceremonies of Indian weddings have added an unparalleled charm to my portfolio. From the intricate henna designs to the lively baraat processions, each moment is filled with cultural significance and visual splendor. As I document the fusion of Indian traditions with the stunning backdrop of Puerto Rico's landscapes, I have found a renewed passion for storytelling through my lens. Prius vs. Ferrari: Which One Would You Rather Drive On Your Wedding Day?

Would you rather drive a Prius or a Ferrari on your wedding day? Here are a few reasons why you shouldn’t hold back on investing in a great destination wedding photographer.

Styling and profiling…

In order to separate yourself from a saturated wedding photography market and establish a more lucrative investment, it is essential to focus on diversifying your services and offering a unique value proposition. While wedding photography remains a popular choice for couples, exploring other niches within the broader photography industry can provide additional revenue streams. Consider expanding your portfolio to include specialized services such as destination photoshoots, pre and post-wedding sessions, or even niche markets like elopements or LGBTQ+ weddings. By targeting untapped segments and catering to specific client needs, you can position yourself as a go-to photographer in these specialized areas, setting yourself apart from the competition and tapping into more lucrative opportunities. Additionally, investing in marketing efforts that highlight your distinctive expertise and showcasing your work through social media, blogs, and collaborations with wedding planners or venues can help attract a clientele seeking a unique and personalized photography experience. Emphasizing your creativity, professionalism, and ability to capture candid emotions will further elevate your brand and create a solid reputation in the industry, leading to a more prosperous and rewarding photography business.

Alvarez. Francisco Alvarez.

As a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I firmly believe in setting myself apart from the competition through pricing that reflects the true value I offer. While some may view lower prices as an attractive option, I understand that quality and expertise come at a cost. By pricing my services competitively but with consideration for the time, skills, and equipment required, I emphasize the exceptional value I bring to each client. This approach ensures that couples receive a personalized experience, capturing their unique love story with creativity, attention to detail, and a level of professionalism that goes beyond photographs. By aligning my pricing with the value I provide, I aim to exceed expectations, leaving a lasting impression and unforgettable memories for every couple I have the privilege to serve.

Know your worth…

Choosing a destination wedding photographer is akin to selecting between a Toyota Prius and a Ferrari. Just like these iconic vehicles, wedding photographers come in different styles and prices, catering to diverse preferences and budgets. Opting for a Toyota Prius, for instance, may represent a more practical decision, prioritizing reliability, fuel efficiency, and affordability. Similarly, choosing a photography package that matches one's needs and restrictions is crucial. On the other hand, selecting a Ferrari alludes to a more luxurious and extravagant choice, reflecting a desire for top-tier quality and unmatched expertise. Ultimately, both decisions require careful consideration of personal preferences, priorities, and available resources, ensuring that the chosen wedding photographer, just like the selected car, perfectly aligns with the couple's vision and aspirations for their special day.

Real value comes from within…

When deciding between purchasing a Toyota Prius or a Ferrari, one must take into consideration their priorities and desired outcomes. Choosing a car is not only about speed and luxury, but also about practicality and functionality. Similarly, when selecting a wedding photographer, it is essential to consider the desired results. While a Ferrari may offer exhilarating speed and attention-grabbing aesthetics, a Toyota Prius prioritizes fuel efficiency and environmental consciousness. In a similar vein, a wedding photographer may specialize in capturing grand and dramatic moments, while another may excel at capturing the quiet subtleties and intimate emotions. Just as the choice between a Prius and a Ferrari depends on one's preferences and priorities, selecting a wedding photographer should be based on the desired outcome, whether it be capturing glamorous and extravagant moments or preserving heartfelt and tender memories. Ultimately, it is crucial to align one's choices with the anticipated results and the values that matter most.

As a wedding photographer, I understand and acknowledge that there may be other more budget-friendly options available in the market. However, I firmly believe in the immense value that I bring to every wedding event. I am not merely a destination wedding photographer; I am a purveyor of unforgettable experiences that will be cherished for a lifetime. It is my commitment to cater to a discerning luxury audience who not only appreciates but demands the artistry, creativity, and meticulous attention to detail that I bring to each and every event.
Through my lens, I possess the remarkable ability to capture not only the momentous occasions, but also the raw emotions, the enchanting ambiance, and the very essence of the entire celebration. I believe that wedding photography is not just about freezing time; it is about encapsulating the depth and richness of the couple's story in a series of exquisitely crafted images. Every photograph I capture tells a compelling story, a narrative that surpasses the boundaries of a single day.
I fully recognize and respect that investing in my services may require a substantial budget allocation. However, I assure you that every penny spent is more than justified by the extraordinary memories I capture and the unparalleled visual storytelling that I provide. It is my unwavering commitment to deliver a wedding album that resonates with authenticity, evokes genuine emotion, and immortalizes the love and connection shared between two souls on their most special day.
So, while I may not be the most affordable option out there, I offer an experience that transcends the ordinary. My dedication to delivering exceptional quality, my ability to seize the intangible moments that make a wedding truly remarkable, and my unyielding passion for my craft make me more than just a photographer—I am a conductor of enchantment, weaving together fleeting moments into a tapestry of everlasting memories.

The Best Thing After A Destination Wedding in Puerto Rico Is A Surprise Marriage Proposal

After shooting destination weddings in Puerto Rico, my 2nd favorite thing to do is capture a surprise marriage proposal. Here’s how and why I do it!

Angelica said YES to Ivan! 💍

I’ve always believed that everything has an origin.

Love has a mysterious way of creeping up on us when we least expect it. More importantly, it has the power to be cemented in perpetuity with one proposing the everlasting kind to another, seemingly out of the blue. This is why I am (and forever will be) a sucker for a great surprise wedding proposal. I’ve shot quite a few in the last couple of months and, after a wedding, it’s my favorite event to photograph for a few reasons I’d like to share.

First and foremost, as a surprise wedding proposal photographer in Puerto Rico, I receive that initial, important phone call from a groom-to-be letting me know that they’re interested in getting down on one knee. This is an exciting moment for me because the first thing that pops into my head is that magical moment in which I forecast a resounding yes in my head; I can actually see the moment happening while manifesting it. Admittedly it gives me butterflies knowing I’ll have a front row seat to a couple’s forever.

That’s when the magic begins to happen.

For the most part, this is when the planning commences. A groom will usually already have a location in mind, one with which I’m very familiar for his surprise marriage proposal; if he has yet to land on a venue he likes, I’ll gladly suggest one that’s rich in scenery and mildly frequented. He, himself, has already chosen his ring and is comfortable with the idea of kneeling in front of his lady. What ensues is the logistics that will encompass that special day ahead. Location, timing and queues are all crucial in a successful outcome for me as a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico.

Dayana said YES to Ryan! 💍

Once the location is agreed upon, I take it upon myself to recall what the best spots for the action to happen are or scout the place a few days ahead to gauge a possible site. After this has been done, a day and time must be chosen in order for a Puerto Rico wedding photographer like myself to arrive about an hour early and decide my vantage point. This is paramount when it comes to surprise marriage proposals because of the fact that I must know everything from lighting conditions and sunset times to foot traffic and angles.

Then I wait patiently for the moment to arrive.

The last thing the groom and I must agree on is the queue: that ever-so-subtle signal that the moment of truth is around the corner. In the past, this has been done by a quick wink in my direction, a few rubs of their beard and even a fixing of the trousers! There are no limits to how I’m notified and it’s my job to be ready at all times. Sometimes the nerves get the best of the groom and I need to have that quick trigger finger on my camera to make sure I don’t miss it. Although this may very well be the most stressful situation a lover may encounter before their wedding in Puerto Rico, by no means is it easy on me. Fortunately, I’ve always stood my ground, kept a good, safe distance from the couple and snapped away some of the most precious moments of my career.

Tay said YES to Tife! 💍

Weddings to me will always ride shotgun when it comes to my photography; there’s no doubt about that. They are the pinnacle of love and hold a place near and dear to my heart. Surprise marriage proposals, however, although much shorter are just as sweet and heighten the passion for what I do. If you’re considering Puerto Rico as your surprise marriage proposal destination, please don’t hesitate to reach out and see if we’re a good match. Let’s make this happen…together!

Why I Never Shoot A Destination Wedding In Puerto Rico Alone

A single photographer can make your wedding day absolutely spectacular, but have you asked yourself just what two can do? In this article, I’ll briefly explain the benefits of hiring my team which is always composed of a second shooter for your destination wedding in Puerto Rico.

Two is company…

As fate would have it, any wedding in and of itself is overwhelming to a couple. Little do they imagine it’s the pinnacle of stress for the people tasked to document it. Don’t get me wrong, I love being entrusted to fulfill the task of commemorating someone’s special day but, from start to finish, it’s no cakewalk for us either. For this reason, and primarily this reason, is why I never show up as a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico alone.

  1. Work Load

Being part of a wedding is stressful; there’s no circumventing the pressure that comes with the job of wedding photographer. As a result, having someone with you from start to finish (or at least for the bulk of the festivities) takes a lot of heaviness from my shoulders. Weddings in Puerto Rico can become quite hectic which is why it always eases the tension of the amount of work required to capture at a wedding.

Don’t get me wrong, I have absolutely no problem whatsoever shooting one alone. Do I really want to? No. That’s because I know I will have missed a few shots here and there and chances are it’s one for which the bride herself will probably never forgive me. Think about this for a second: the average wedding entails details, getting ready for both bride and groom, a first look, the ceremony, bride and groom session, cocktail hour, reception, etc. The thought of having to carry that load all by yourself is exhausting, let alone actually doing it.

Having a 2nd shooter comes in handy for a plethora of reasons the most important of which is knowing you have backup and you don’t have to do everything yourself.

Just the two of us…

2. Delegation

Having a second shooter by your side at all times also gives you the ability to delegate. This, by nature, means that the photographer that you choose to accompany you will be provided with a certain amount of shots that you’d normally have to take yourself. This includes, but isn’t limited to: the venue, the details, the entourage, the lunch/dinner plates, etc. Although never less important, they help tell the story so that you can stitch it all together in post-production.

Moreover, a 2nd shooter will almost always be able to capture the pictures that you would otherwise miss. Let’s face facts: you cannot be in two places at once. Sometimes things are happening in the pews and you’re nowhere near that side of the Church. Other times you’ll be requested to shoot both the bride and the groom getting ready simultaneously and this is where you can send your 2nd shooter to take care of one while you’re shooting the other.

More often than not I’ll recover my SD Cards from all of my shooters (both photo and video) and, when I go to check the pictures that they’ve taken, I’ll know for a fact that there was no way I could’ve taken those images because I was somewhere else creatively.

Your turn…

3. Spotlight On You

I think that we can all agree that, when it comes to your destination wedding in Puerto Rico, you want most, if not all, of the attention to fall on yourself. And you know what? Rightfully so! It’s your wedding, not anyone else’s and I agree. When it’s all said and done, my galleries all include pictures of you and your partner 75% of the time. There’s a reason why this is the case.

You guessed it: because I brought a second shooter. You see, the main (and by far the most important reason) why I never shoot destination weddings in Puerto Rico alone is because of the fact that it allows me to place most of my attention on the bride and groom. That’s ultimately where we both want to be: you in front of my camera and myself behind it. Yes, the bride and groom sessions are paramount but what if I told you that I can make your entire wedding a bride and groom session?

You’d jump all over that in a heartbeat, wouldn’t you? Of course you would which is why I always include a second photographer in all of my packages regardless of the length and size of the destination wedding. If I can put myself in a position to succeed and provide you with more memorable moments of yourself and your other half, trust me when I say this: I’m going to do it.

We both get one shot at this: let’s do it right.

Elopement or Destination Wedding: Which One Is Right For YOU?

Elopement or Destination Wedding: Which One Is Right For YOU?

Let’s decide…together.

Regardless of where you stand, your nuptials are going to be special. I first should lead with that because, in these times of uncertainty, it’s comforting to know you’ll have someone who has your best interests at heart. That’s me: my name is Francis and I’m a destination wedding photographer in San Juan, Puerto Rico. If you're coming across these words, chances are you’re also considering coming to this enchanted island for a coveted bride and groom getaway and you know what? I don’t blame you: this is paradise.

The question is: how will you be celebrating it?

This is where I come in. After being a photographer in Puerto Rico, I’ve had the privilege and honor of capturing some of the most grounded and fascinating couples to which list I would love to add you. In this short article I’ve prepared, I’m going to pinpoint the deciding factors of whether you should choose to have a cozy, intimate elopement with your closest friends and relatives or if you should go all out and have the wedding you’ve always wanted. I’ll be outlining some pros and cons of both for benefit; this way you’ll have the most important talking points clear before you reach out to me.

  1. Planning

Let’s get organized…

It goes without saying but, for all intents and purposes, I will: it doesn’t matter if you go with elopement or destination wedding, planning is going to be crucial. Nuptials that are not well planned and shot from the hip are bound to be a disaster regardless of size. Granted, I think it’s safe to say that an elopement will require a lot less planning than even a micro-wedding (four hours or less). That does not necessarily say that you should wing it and be spontaneous on the spot either. In this section we’ll be discussing how planning is always going to be a part of the equation and how the tasks of putting together a timeline may ultimately affect the way you lean.

Elopements are much less convoluted than any style of wedding and rightfully so. An elopement is usually done on a whim and is something that comes naturally to couples. Partners who are more laidback and relaxed as far as their relationships are concerned tend to choose elopements over a wedding simply because they won’t want to get tangled up “in a hot mess”. Elopements are shorter and this require much less attention to detail as opposed to weddings. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that an elopement can be planned in literally a day if you do it right. All you really need is to book a flight to Puerto Rico (which can take minutes if you fly often), check out a venue you like and book a suite and finally hire an officiant to take care of business for you. That’s exactly what my couple Anthony & Joanna did when they paid me a visit at Copamarina last year. Fun fact: I was one of their witnesses! The extra mile can also be applied by asking just a handful of folks to tag along but, for the most part, the planning for elopements is easy, quick and should constitute no more than 10 people.

Weddings, on the other hand, is a whole different story. From micro-weddings to more lavish ones, the planning can be quite overwhelming depending on just how complex you’d like your special day. Based on my experience as a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, most couples usually resort to the hiring of a wedding planner to do all the heavy lifting. This takes a load off and makes the planning more enjoyable for the fact that you’re paying someone to do it for you. A wedding planner is tasked with most of the more important aspects of your wedding such as picking the venue, the photographer/videographer, DJ, catering, decor, etc. The list goes on and on depending on the magnitude of your special day but I’m sure you get the picture.

Choosing to put all of this on your shoulders can be a daunting feat but the good news is that you get to decide just how big that weight is since you’re in control one hundred percent of the time. Not delegating does have its benefits and one of those is being behind the wheel of the vision you’ve had in your head this entire time. This may prove to be useful if you’re in the business of not butting heads with anyone and prefer having a bird’s eye view for the day to come. Conversely, having that person by your side who is equally invested in you will go above and beyond to make that happen.

2. Investment

Money matters…

Let’s not cover the sky with your hand here: both options on the table will put a dent on your finances. From a simple, one-hour elopement to a ten hour destination wedding, either choice will not come cheap. This section isn’t about money as much as it involves deciding just how much you’re willing to invest in a day that will (hopefully) come once in your life. A few factors to consider when taking budget into consideration is your current financial state of affairs. If you’ve got a heavy mortgage, paying a premium on a luxury vehicle, up to your neck in student debt or simply lack the savings on which to fall back, then eloping with a handful of folks or, at most, having a micro-wedding is going to look like a viable option.

Like with all matters of life, there’s a flip side to every coin. If you’re one of those couples that has always wanted to experience getting married like royalty and/or you’re affluent enough that a few thousands wouldn’t matter as much then a full-blown wedding might just be up your alley. What exactly does that entail? Well, for starters hiring a solid planner to tie up loose ends is a good start. Right after that comes entrusting the documentation to a reknowned Puerto Rico destination wedding photographer like myself. If you’re willing to spend this amount of money to commemorate your big day, the last thing you want to do is to allocate that responsibility to someone not experienced enough to know what they’re doing. Details, getting ready, first looks, the ceremony, bride and groom sessions, cocktail hour and reception are all moments that you’re going to want to capture and coverage like that will not be inexpensive. Add to that the venue rental, catering, musicians, floral arrangements and all of a sudden you’re looking at a pretty penny.

At the end of the day, what matters is how you feel, not what you spent.

One thing is certain: money comes and goes. When it’s all said and done you have to check the wallet and ask yourself one very important question: if I’m going to do this only once, will I be happy with something low-key and modest or will I eventually regret not having the wedding of my dreams? Only you can answer that.

Whatever you choose, make sure it will make you happy.

Make it special…
