It usually takes place about two hours before the ceremony start time, offering an intimate space away from the crowd to share emotions without the pressure of an audience. This moment allows for raw, authentic reactions that are often very emotional and provide some of the most cherished photos of the day. The first look also helps to ease nerves and can be a practical choice for timelines, allowing couple portraits to be taken before the ceremony, freeing up time later for more mingling with guests. Allocate at least 20 to 30 minutes for this session, including the setup and the actual moment, which should be unhurried to allow the couple to savor this time together. Coordination with the officiant is essential to ensure smooth transitions, especially if there are specific photo moments to capture like lighting a unity candle or exchanging personal vows. Make sure guests are aware of any phone or photo restrictions to keep the atmosphere focused on the couple. The ceremony is not just about the logistics but also setting the emotional tone, so a well-timed entry, clear instructions for guests, and smooth transitions can enhance the experience for everyone involved.

     After the ceremony, it’s time for group portraits, which can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the number of combinations and the size of the families. A pre-determined shot list is invaluable here to keep things organized and efficient, minimizing the time guests are standing around. Start with large group shots and work your way down to smaller, more intimate combinations, which allows elderly guests or young children to be photographed early and then released. This segment often runs smoother when a family member or wedding planner helps to gather people quickly. Lighting and location are key; if possible, choose a spot near the ceremony site that offers shade and diffused light to avoid harsh shadows and squinting. One of the things I give out as homework as a professional photographer in Puerto Rico is providing me with what I call a ‘shot list’: essentially a list of groupings for both your family and friends so that we’re both efficient and effective with our time.

One of the best things that a couple can do for me as a photographer in Puerto Rico is arrange for a solid half hour with their wedding planner because some of the best pictures from the day are shot during this timeframe.

Consider live music or entertainment to keep the atmosphere lively. It’s also a good time for photographers to capture detail shots of the reception setup before guests take their seats. As as wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, it’s safe to say that while family and friends are cooling off during cocktail hour, I can usually be found taking this precious time with the couple for a private photo shoot.

     The reception kicks off with grand entrances, where the wedding party and the newlyweds make their debut. This is usually followed by the first dance, which can be one of the most memorable parts of the evening. Allocate about 30 minutes for these opening events, including the entrance, first dance, father-daughter and mother-son dances, and toasts. Timing is key to keep the momentum flowing, and it’s important to coordinate with the DJ or band to ensure smooth transitions between each segment. Toasts are a highlight, offering heartfelt, often humorous insights into the couple’s journey. These moments are filled with emotion, providing rich opportunities for capturing reactions from both the couple and their guests. Destination weddings in Puerto Rico usually do not skip this step as it is one of the most anticipated because of how jovial it is in nature.

Depending on the style of service—plated, buffet, or family-style—dinner can last anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half. This is a quieter time in the reception, allowing guests to recharge and enjoy conversations. It’s also an opportunity for photographers to capture candid moments of guests enjoying themselves at the table. Ensure the meal service aligns with the overall flow of the evening; timing is crucial so that the evening doesn’t feel rushed or drag on too long. Couples should also plan to eat early in the service so they can visit tables or take a few more photos without missing the chance to enjoy their own meal. Admittedly, as a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico I usually refrain from taking a lot of pictures during the dinner portion of the wedding day because the last thing I’d like to capture is people chewing with their mouths full.

10. Reception Dancing

     Once dinner wraps up, the dance floor opens, and it’s time for the party to really get started. A well-timed transition from dinner to dancing keeps the energy up and guests engaged. Typically, this segment can last for a few hours, interspersed with other events like the cake cutting, bouquet toss, or any cultural traditions the couple wishes to include. The goal is to keep the dance floor lively and accessible, with a mix of music that caters to all ages and tastes. Coordinating with the DJ or band to maintain a fun and energetic atmosphere is key, as this is where many of the most joyful and candid moments of the day happen. The reception usually winds down with a grand exit or last dance, sending the couple off in style. One of my favorite style of photography for the reception is performing what’s called ‘shutter drag’ which is when I make an otherwise boring scenario seem lively with an in-camera technique as seen above.

     This is the wedding that almost didn’t happen, for a plethora of reasons. Firstly, Tamiaka & Willie were not meant to be my clients. It just so happens that a pair of colleagues were contacted by this couple but, because they were already booked that day, my fellow Puerto Rico wedding photographers reached out to me to see if I had availability. Fortunately, I looked at my calendar and saw an opening. Shortly thereafter I’m put in contact with Tamiaka and Willie so that we can get the ball rolling on a potential union. They were looking for a short, four-hour intimate wedding and those just so happen to be some of my favorites. We hit it off from the get-go and agreed we’d be a wonderful fit

     As the special day got closer, we decided it’d be best to keep in touch. I asked Tamiaka to provide me with a ‘shot list’: that is the group portraits of both family and friends that to her are ‘must-haves’ & make my life as a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico a lot easier. Whenever we get a shot list we basically do a roll call of the people on it so that we’re efficient yet effective with the couples’s time (specially when they only booked me for four hours). They weren’t working with a planner so I had my work cut out for me as far as a timeline was concerned. More responsibilities fall on the photographer’s shoulders when wedding planners aren’t hired because, for the most part, the documentation vendor is second-in-command; we got on the same page and dove head first.

     It was about 4 p.m. when I got to the Caribe Hilton on July 13th: wedding day. Tamiaka’s parents, Kevin and Frances, met me downstairs as the entire bridal was still getting ready in their hotel rooms. They were the nicest people coming in from Grand Rapids, Michigan; I told them that Eddie, my assistant for the day, and I would be in a few minutes to start documenting some of the behind-the-scenes process. The heat and humidity was already getting to us as we broke out in. sweat just by sitting down at the hotel lobby; this is something that you can expect when you’re getting married down here and a feeling I know all too well as a result of being a Puerto Rico destination wedding photographer.

     As we made our way up to Tamiaka’s room, I was greeted by one of her bridesmaids who was kind enough to let us into the busy room. Tamiaka herself was still in the bathroom getting ready so Eddie and I decided to start shooting pictures with her immediate entourage. She has a lovely dress, nice pair of shoes, a few bouquets for her main girls and a whole lot of charisma that pairs well with the pendant she had on her head. Miscellaneous shots of her bridal party were take and, as soon as she was fitting into her dress, Eddie and I decided to move onto the venue area to snap a few pictures of the scenic sights and sounds photographers in Puerto Rico love to see and hear shortly before the ceremony is about to start.

When I got to the ceremony venue, I saw a lot of empty chairs; I imagined the entourage just hadn’t made their way to the site but that wasn’t the biggest concern at the time. When I looked up, I saw I had no blue skies or white clouds but an overcast afternoon instead. In the grand scheme of things that’s not the worst thing in the world because an overcast day provides a natural softbox of light for photography (which is welcome when you don’t have one but that wasn’t the case here). I made some friends among the guests and took their pictures while I wanted the first order of business to kick off. That’s when I started seeing the immediate bridal party lining up to start making their way onto the ceremony grounds. As I thought we were just about to commence, I catch wind of another possible inconvenience: the DJ was late.

Not only is he not present but he’s also the master of ceremonies and supposed to kick things off with music specifically chosen by Tamiaka and Willie. The looks of concern start appearing in everyone’s faces including my own; Eddie and I start shrugging shoulders and each other wondering what the hold up is when, our of nowhere, we see a guy with an iPad in one hand and a loudspeaker in the other making the way to the backyard which is where my couple was going to tie the knot. As he fumbles through his hear and cable management, I come to the conclusion that he was the vendor on which we were waiting and I walk over to the couple to reassure them everything was going to be alright. Little did I know I was wrong…REALLY wrong.

It started pouring.

At first I thought we were going to be able to fight the sprinkles coming down but, in a matter of two to three minutes, the torrential downpour forced us to scurry inside and me to cover up my expensive equipment. Needless to say the wedding guests were not happy and don’t even get me started with Tamiaka. She was dumbfounded as to why the DJ kept them from proceeding; he later pleaded his case chalking things up to a miscommunication on his part. The more he spoke, the more irate Tamiaka became and it looked as if she had a bomb in her chest which could explode in any second. In order to mitigate that from possibly happening, I looked out the window and later told the bride and groom that the rain had subsided. This meant that, instead of taking the event indoors (which admittedly is not what Tamiaka wanted), we could give the outside ceremony another attempt. Lo and behold, we did and it was beautiful.

It was then that I was introduced to Ana, the officiant hired by the couple, and exchanged some quick pleasantries before the entourage was back in their positions. As we were about to start, Eddie hits the record button on his Sony A7SIII so that he can record some behind-the-scenes footage for me, a strategy that I’ve recently adopted in order to use that footage to market myself as a destination wedding Photographer in Puerto Rico. The heavy clouds dissipated and we were on our way. The ceremony went on as expected with Ana swinging the microphone towards the couple for their “I dos” and I was circling everyone present so that I could capture the wonderful and heartfelt moments that make a weddings in Puerto Rico truly memorable.

As soon as the ceremony wrapped up, Eddie and I quickly grabbed our flash gear and starting looking for areas for the ensuing bride and groom session. This is the perfect time for wedding photographers in Puerto Rico to showcase their skillset using creativity knowing they’re going to have time alone with the bride and groom. As the rest of the guests made their way to the reception hall for cocktail hour, I got to work on the couple using my Godox kit while maintaining as much ambient light as possible; truthfully, there wasn’t a lot of natural light to work with but I did my absolute best to balance it with the artificial one we were using.

When we wrapped up the bride and groom session with Tamiaka & Willie, they went to join their guests at the cocktail hour balcony while Eddie took a breather and I got started on the reception details. While my clients unwind, I like to sneak into the reception hall when nobody is around so that I can, in an uninterruptedly fashion, paint the picture of what it was like to be there before the raucous crowd takes over. If there’s any peaceful and or stress-free moment during a wedding I’d say it’s definitely these instances where you find yourself in a mostly empty room (aside from the venue staff still working tirelessly to set everything up). You have nobody tapping you on the shoulder and you can whip out your best lenses to get that dreamy, out-of-focus background while isoating the couple’s’s knick-knacks.

As with everyone, vendors are people and we eat too. Eddie and I sat down to grab some grub while the entire entourage was also enjoying their food. As a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I think this is the appropriate time to do so for two reasons: it levels the playing field and allows for the couple to understand that you have needs too and also due to the fact that whenever you try to capture the guests eating dinner, they hardly ever look great with food in their mouths. The staff in charge of the kitchen served Eddie and I a lovely eggplant parmesan dish that was rather small in size but quite large in taste. I wouldn’t say it was the most lavish meal I’ve ever had but Tamiaka and Willie definitely took my request seriously and for that I’m grateful.

I stayed behind a few minutes after the cake cutting portion of the festivities because Tamiaka had confessed that they had scheduled it for roughly the same time that I was scheduled to leave. When these things happen I don’t mind staying behind a few more minutes if it’s either going to make a huge difference and/or put a smile on my couple’s face. As they took to the dance floor, I turned on my flash trigger and dialed in my settings which I had configured as soon as I arrived onto the reception area. As they spun around and professed eternal love, I did my thing circling them back and forth trying to find the perfect vantage point to encapsulate them within my frame but also have the burst of flash be present in the compostion. Can’t blame me: this is what you can expect when I’m hired as your wedding photographer in Puerto Rico.

It’s all in the details…

     As a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, the getting ready portion of the event may very well be my favorite part of a couple’s nuptials. To me, it acts as the preface, the establishing moments during the wedding where we introduce the main characters. It is during this time where I choose to highlight them to the best of my abilities and paint them in the best light, both figuratively and literally. There is, however, a supporting cast that often goes unmentioned but provides a wonderful assist telling a better love story for the partners getting married. I will share some of my favorites now so that, if you’re considering getting married with me, can be better prepared to take some of the most amazing shots during your special day.

1. The Love Letter

     Unlike a vow book, writing a wedding-day specific love letter to your counterpart is one of the most romantic things I can shoot as a professional photographer in Puerto Rico. Pouring your emotions and letting them flow through your pen’s ink makes for some of the most memorable captures paired with my ability to capture a candid moment. The reason why writing your future husband or wife a love letter is so rewarding is because you’ll be the only one to ever read it and that alone makes the words you share that much more special. It’s a wonderful opportunity to go back to the day you met, what your relationship makes you feel and convey a heartwarming moment that you’ve shared in the past, one that has become a stepping stone and led you to where you are today. The really epic love letters always make someone shed a tear if truly written in an emotional way and that’s the perfect change for me to attain some truly intimate shots as a Puerto Rico wedding photographer.

2. Couple’s Gift

     Many times unbeknownst to me, the couple will gift themselves with a token of their appreciation towards one another. Sometimes it’s a small detail that is tied to either an inside joke or a past memory they’ve made together while others may actually be quite lavish in nature, symbolic of how much they mean to each other. I think that couples who gift each other an item and exchange them during the wedding day really add value to the getting ready portion of the wedding day, one that I treasure dearly as a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico. I’ve seen it all from a watch that the groom would wear on the day of the wedding to a bracelet that the bride would don as it glistens while walking down the aisle. Regardless of what you decide to gift, my recommendation is that it moves your counterpart to the point where I’m able to put myself in a position to capture that end result as a professional photographer in Puerto Rico.

3. The Vow Book

     As opposed to the aforementioned love letter, having a dedicated vow book is something very special. Sometimes they’re written in advance and others, in a more sentimental way, can be written the day of the wedding and have a little bit more weight to them. As a photographer in Puerto Rico focused on destination weddings, I know that, to a bride and groom, a vow book goes way deeper than a love letter ever will. It’s essentially a promise contract, one that will be honored for a long as both members shall live. Think of this as the previous love letter but on steroids. A vow book promises to deliver some of the more emotional moments that I will ever capture so really writing from the heart will put me in a position to succeed. Images like shedding a tear, a hand on the face and even an image of a bride or groom reading it in private from a distance will be extremely meaningful when added to your final gallery.

4. The Details

     The details are considered more of that pertaining to each individual. They represent what is symbolic to each respective partner and, as a photographer in San Juan, Puerto Rico, I thoroughly enjoy capturing these as creatively as possible. From whiskey bottles and luxury watches to Louis Vuitton bags and handcrafter invitations, nice flat lay photography gives me a great starting point for your wedding day. I usually love getting to the wedding venue, regardless if its Hacienda Siesta Alegre or Hotel Vanderbilt in Condado, so that I can take my time decorating the details and exercise my craft in a stress-free environment. I wholeheartedly believe that I’d be doing a disservice to my couple if I were to skip photographing details simply because I think they play such a vital role in the storytelling process of someone’s special day. They’re like stepping stones leading up to a wonderful journey that you’re about to embark on and, as a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I want to make sure I tell an engaging one.
